Barratt Galvin: How to Stand Out in a Competitive Legal Market

The legal job market is a competitive one and can be extremely difficult to navigate. Here are some helpful tips to help you stand out from other candidates:

1. Build a Strong Personal Brand

Establish a professional online presence through platforms like LinkedIn. Share insights, articles, and updates related to your area of law. Your online activity can demonstrate your expertise and commitment to the field.

2. Update your Resume at times when you are NOT job searching

A great way to prepare for any job search is to continually add to your resume in draft form, even while you are not job searching. Just a few notes into your current job which highlight projects you’ve worked on and tasks you’ve performed. Add deals to a deal sheet upon the deal completion. When you are ready to begin a job search, preparing your CV will be a lot less overwhelming as you will have points in draft form to add to.

3.Tailor Your Resume and Cover Letter

Customize your resume and cover letter for each job application. Highlight relevant experiences, skills, and accomplishments that align with the job description. Use specific examples to showcase your achievements and contributions. This will demonstrate to the hiring manager that you have taken a considered approach to the application and that your application is not a copy and paste job. Be as specific as you can, without compromising client or matter confidentiality.

4. Gain Specialized Experience

Pursue internships, clerkships, or volunteer opportunities in your desired legal specialization. Specialized experience can make you a more attractive candidate and provide you with unique insights into that area of law.

5. Network

Attend legal conferences, seminars, and networking events. Join legal associations and bar groups to connect with industry professionals. Networking can lead to job opportunities, mentorship, and valuable industry insights.

6. Pursue Continued Education

Engage in continuous learning by attending workshops, obtaining certifications, or pursuing advanced degrees. Staying updated with the latest developments in your field shows your dedication to professional growth. You may also wish to speak at conferences or hold educational seminars yourself which would also assist in building your own personal brand.

7. Develop Soft Skills

In addition to legal knowledge, develop strong soft skills such as communication, negotiation, and leadership. These skills are essential for client interactions, teamwork and management.

8. Showcase Your Achievements

During interviews, be prepared to discuss your accomplishments and how they have contributed to your previous employers or clients. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your responses.

9. Demonstrate Flexibility and Adaptability

Show your willingness to take on new challenges and adapt to changing circumstances. Employers value candidates who can handle diverse tasks and thrive in dynamic environments.

10. Maintain Professionalism

Exhibit professionalism in all interactions, from your resume and cover letter to interviews and networking events. Being punctual, respectful, and well-prepared leaves a lasting positive impression.

By implementing these strategies, you can enhance your visibility and appeal in the legal job market, increasing your chances of securing desirable positions and advancing your legal career.
